As a family dental practice serving Southern York County, we're here to guide you and your child through every step of pediatric extractions. When an extraction is necessary, Dr. Kaplan and Dr.Krishnan provide compassionate care to make the experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

While we always aim to preserve your child's natural teeth whenever possible, there are situations where extraction is necessary, such as:
• Severe decay that cannot be saved with a filling or root canal
• Infection or damage caused by injury
• Crowding that needs to be addressed before orthodontic treatment
• An impacted tooth that cannot erupt properly
We understand that your child needing an extraction can be stressful. Our team will walk you through the process and make sure you both feel informed and at ease before any treatment begins.
For most extractions, the process is straight forward. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic, and the tooth is gently removed. If your child has an impacted tooth, any gum tissue covering it will need to be cleared first. For more complex cases, we may refer you to an oral surgeon and discuss sedation options to keep your child comfortable.
After the extraction, we'll provide gauze to help stop any bleeding and go over home care instructions before you leave our Shrewsbury office. If your child's tooth was removed early in development, we may also recommend a space maintainer to preserve room for the permanent tooth to come in.
Following the extraction, your child should bite down on agauze pad until bleeding stops. For at least 72 hours, they should avoid using a straw or brushing directly next to the extraction site, as this helps protect the blood clot and supports proper healing.
Some sensitivity or mild discomfort in the area is normal and should ease within a day or two. Once healed, your child can return to their regular brushing and flossing routine. If you notice severe pain, swelling, or bleeding that doesn't improve, contact our office right away, and we'll see your child promptly.
